Saresh’s Naam Katra Isai Crowned as the Best Asian Movie at 16th Edison Awards

The Edison Awards, a prestigious event celebrating the luminaries and rising stars of Indian cinema, pays homage to the legendary Thomas Alva Edison, the Father of Cinema. With a rich history spanning over fifteen years, these awards serve as a beacon of recognition for the remarkable talent and dedication displayed by actors and technicians in the realm of silver screen artistry. From the iconic stalwarts such as Vijay, Dhanush, Simbu, and Vikram, to the emerging talents like Sivakarthikeyan and Anirudh, the Edison Awards showcase the dynamic range of creativity and innovation within the industry.

On March 24th, 2024, the 16th edition of the prestigious Edison Awards took place at the Chennai Trade Centre. The event drew in a multitude of celebrities and industry icons who gathered to recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of various talents in Indian cinema. Throughout the ceremony, deserving movies and individuals were honored, adding to the legacy of excellence associated with the Edison Awards. Among the highlights of the evening was the crowning of the Malaysian Tamil film “Naam Katra Isai,” directed by Saresh D7, as the Best Asian Movie. The movie was selected for this award by the panel of judges.

The prestigious award was bestowed by the legendary director, Bharathiraja, and accepted by Presley Lazil, the co-producer of the movie, along with actors Irfan Zaini and Mogan Chandra Dass, representing the entire team of “Naam Katra Isai.”

“Naam Katra Isai,” released on November 23rd, 2023, initially faced a challenge in garnering substantial theatrical attendance. However, as word spread about its captivating storyline and cinematic brilliance, audiences flocked to theaters, leading to a surge in demand. Responding to this overwhelming reception, theaters extended the movie’s screening period. Consequently, “Naam Katra Isai” soared to become one of the highest-grossing films of the preceding year, etching a significant milestone in the history of Malaysian Tamil cinema.

This remarkable success owes much to the masterful direction of Saresh D7, whose visionary craftsmanship brought the narrative to life on the silver screen. “Naam Katra Isai” intricately weaves a tale that delves into the triumphs and challenges faced by a musician navigating the complexities of the music industry. The movie features Saresh himself alongside Yuvaraj Krishnasamy, Irfan Zaini, Alvin Martin, and many other talented artists and produced by SLY Entertainment. Yuvaraj, in his supporting role, delivered an extraordinary performance, as he fully immersed himself in his character. Irfan’s portrayal of a different kind of role added depth and emotion to every scene he appeared in. When Varnam Malaysia got close up with Presley, the co-producer of “Naam Katra Isai”, he said:

The CEO’s endorsement not only validates the exceptional quality of our film but also emphasizes the growing global appeal of Malaysian Tamil cinema. It serves as evidence of the dedication and creativity of our filmmakers and artists, paving the way for greater recognition and opportunities on the international stage.

When asked about his emotions concerning this triumph, Saresh, the director of “Naam Katra Isai,” humbly shared his perspective. He expressed, “I dedicate this victory to my Naam Katra Isai family and to all those who contributed, whether directly or indirectly. Each individual played a pivotal role in the film’s creation, and they all deserve recognition for their contributions.”

Discussions are underway regarding both a prequel and sequel to “Naam Katra Isai.” The recent awards and recognition received by the film have raised the bar even higher for these anticipated projects. Audiences eagerly anticipate any updates from the SLY team.

Notably, “Naam Katra Isai” emerged as the popular movie chosen by public through voting at the 3rd edition of the MICA Awards. Additionally, the film received accolades at the 15th Norway Tamil Film Festival, winning awards for Best Screenplay Writer, Best Music Director, and Best Actor. These achievements serve as a poignant reminder of the significance of genuine talent, diligent effort, and unwavering artistic integrity.
