The upcoming visit of India’s External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar, to Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (March 27) marks a pivotal moment for both India and Malaysia. Set against the backdrop of Malaysia’s impending assumption of the ASEAN chair in 2025, the discussions between the two nations hold significant weight in shaping the future of the Indo-Pacific region.
As Co-Chairman of the ASEAN India Business Council (AIBC), Dato Ramesh Kodammal highlighted that India remains committed to upholding ASEAN norms and principles, crucially aligning with the region’s collective vision for stability amid global power dynamics.
Jaishankar’s visit signifies India’s dedication to fostering regional cooperation in Southeast Asia, a sentiment echoed by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Despite recent fluctuations in bilateral relations, both countries have demonstrated resilience in addressing challenges and maintaining a warm and substantive relationship.
Notably, Malaysia holds strategic importance for India’s Act East Policy, as showcased by the elevation of their partnership to a comprehensive strategic level in 2015. This relationship extends beyond mere diplomacy to encompass robust trade, commerce, and defence cooperation. With bilateral trade nearing the US$20 billion mark in recent years, both nations are eyeing a target of US$25 billion by 2026.
However, challenges persist, particularly in achieving balanced trade. Despite significant post-pandemic growth, trade remains skewed in favour of Malaysia. Ramesh stressed the importance of diversifying trade and enhancing India’s exports to Malaysia.
The historical ties between Malaysia and India, spanning over six decades, underscore the depth of their relationship. As they celebrate milestones such as the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and three decades of the ASEAN-India Dialogue Partnership, there’s a shared recognition of the need for renewed momentum.
Looking ahead, there’s immense potential for deeper people-to-people contacts and increased tourism between the two nations. As Jaishankar engages in discussions in Kuala Lumpur, the outcomes of this visit are poised to not only strengthen bilateral ties but also contribute to the broader regional stability and prosperity envisioned by both India and Malaysia in the Indo-Pacific.
