Ugadi, also known as Yugadi, marks the commencement of the New Year in multiple states across India, each celebrating the occasion under different names but with shared fervour and significance. As the start of the harvest season approaches, Ugadi heralds a time of renewal, hope, and promises of prosperity. It is a momentous occasion where people embrace new beginnings, don new attire, adorn their homes, and come together to welcome the dawn of a fresh year.

Rooted in ancient traditions, Ugadi holds historical and cultural significance. The term “Yugadi” derives from “yug,” meaning era, and “adi,” signifying the beginning of something new. Its recognition as the commencement of the New Year traces back to the 12th century, attributed to the Indian mathematician Bhaskaracharya. He identified Ugadi as the auspicious time when the harsh grip of winter relinquishes its hold, giving way to the blossoming of spring—a season symbolising rejuvenation and abundance.

According to Hindu mythology, Ugadi holds profound spiritual importance. It is believed that on this auspicious day, Brahma, the creator of the universe, initiated the genesis of existence, thereby sanctifying Ugadi as the ideal time for new beginnings and celebrations. Moreover, Ugadi marks the inception of a sixty-year cycle known as “Samvatsara,” with each year within the cycle bearing a unique name and significance.

Beyond its religious connotations, Ugadi resonates as a joyous occasion for families and communities to come together in merriment. It serves as an opportunity to reflect on the past, express gratitude for blessings received, and set intentions for the future. Amidst the jubilant atmosphere, traditional rituals and customs are observed, including the preparation of special dishes like Ugadi Pachadi—a concoction symbolizing the varied flavors of life.
