After a hiatus of three decades, India makes a resounding return to the main competition at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival with “All We Imagine as Light,” directed by Payal Kapadia. The brilliant director, already a familiar name at Cannes, having won the Golden Eye Award for Best Documentary in 2021 for “A Night of Knowing Nothing,” now vies for the coveted Palme d’Or alongside luminaries of world cinema. Her journey from documentary acclaim to competing in the festival’s main category underscores her versatility and artistic depth.

“All We Imagine as Light” follows the narrative of Prabha and Anu, two nurses in Mumbai grappling with the restrictions of womanhood, who embark on a transformative road trip to a coastal town. Against the backdrop of a mystical forest, their journey becomes a canvas where dreams intertwine with reality, offering a poignant exploration of female emotions and aspirations.

The production of the film represents a collaborative effort spanning continents, with French-based company Petit Chaos and India’s Another Birth leading the way. Supported by a consortium of international producers from India, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Italy, the film epitomises the spirit of cross-cultural exchange and cooperation that Cannes celebrates.

Beyond its cinematic merits, “All We Imagine as Light” signifies an important milestone for Indian cinema. The last Indian film to compete in the main category at Cannes was the Malayalam film “Swaham” by director Shaji N. Karun in 1994. Now, three decades later, India returns with a narrative that promises to captivate audiences worldwide and reaffirm the nation’s position on the global cinematic stage.

Sandhya Suri’s debut feature, “Santosh,” also adds to India’s presence at Cannes, having been selected for the prestigious ‘Un Certain Regard’ section. This dual representation underscores the depth and diversity of Indian storytelling, offering a glimpse into the multifaceted narratives emerging from the subcontinent.
