The Tamil Indian film industry was torn in two directions when musical maestros Ilaiyaraaja and S.P. Balasubrahmanyam (SPB) were caught in a messy situation. SPB was served a legal notice from Ilaiyaraaja’s attorney, asking him not to perform Ilayaraja’s compositions for copyright concerns.

Since the early ’60s, SPB supported Ilayaraja and his brothers through their music career. SPB who has a staggering achievement of 40,000 songs in a career span of over 50 years has worked with Ilayaraja to create some of the most evergreen tunes such as Unna Nenache Pattu Padichen from Apoorva Sagodharargal and Mandram Vantha Thendralukku in Mouna Ragam. The copyright debacle caused a huge stir up in the industry as singers would have to pay huge financial penalties if the broke the copyright law.

The legal spat between the duo started in 2016 and singers were not allowed to sing any of Ilayaraja’s composition for fear of breaching the Copyright Amendment Act, 2012. Although SPB cleared the air by saying that the two are still friends, there was no denying that the clash of the titans tore the industry in different directions.

In a turn of events, we found a video posted by SPB Charan, singer, producer and son of SPB, showing Ilaiyaraaja and S.P. Balasubrahmanyam working together in what seems to look like a studio. Charan captioned the video by saying, “And this happens. #spb#illayaraja“.
