Selvaraghavan On MeToo; I Won’t Work With Sexual Harassers!

Now that is a refreshing opinion. For the longest time, many artists who have sexually harassed have walked away freely. Many other renown filmmakers continue to work with them, hence giving them more power.

It is a very progressive time for the world and if you do not keep up with this, you will be left behind. It is not okay to say that,

” I have grown up thinking otherwise so I would not change” or “This is how I am, so deal with it”

Ladies out there, remember if you hear these words, RUN! These are red flags!

So coming back to Selvaraghavan, he has pledged to work with sexual harassers. In a recent interview, he said he was wrong to even release the ‘Adida Avala’ song from his 2011 film Mayakkam Enna, which was slammed for its misogyny.

“When you are making a movie and you know something like that may affect women— I think we made a mistake. We filmmakers should be socially responsible also. Maybe when we make a movie in the future, we should be careful. We, filmmakers, should be a part of society also. People relate to movies a lot here.”

Being socially responsible is a must for all of us. We are all influencing the people around us in our own ways. Having that sense of responsibility is important and vital for our society’s growth. In our very small Indian community, it goes without saying that Indian youth look up to movie stars.

He also went on to talk about the #MeToo Movement.

Selvaraghavan also mentioned that it is good that there is a movement like this.

“So it’s good (that) women come out and talk and have the courage to say that. I think it’s a very important movement for our country and I really think every woman should come out and speak more on it.”

The director also went on to say that people should not work with sexual offenders,

“I personally feel stricter laws also should come. I was telling everyone around me, from when I was in college. I think for rape he should be hanged or shot. Of course, it’s my opinion.”

I can only hope that more directors can be more aware of how they write and direct their films.

Selvaraghavan’s NGK is coming out soon, on 31st May! It stars Surya, Sai Pallavi and Rakul Preet Singh! Looks promising!
