The Beauty of “Heeramandi”, The Diamond Bazaar by Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Heeramandi is a new drama series released on 1st May in Netflix. The series was a classic Sanjay Leela Bhansali creation. With a huge cast of beautiful women’s from the Indian Industry. Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Richa Chandha. The series was announced in 2021 and is one of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s biggest project.

When we watch a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, we know how beautiful he portrays the women’s and Indian culture. For Bhansali, ” All Women’s are Beautiful”. Every films of his, he adds a royal cultural look for the film.  Mesmerizing tapestry of culture, fashion, and powerful storytelling. Set against the backdrop of pre-independence India, the series offers a deep dive into the opulent world of courtesans, bringing to life the grandeur and complexity of an era rich in tradition and artistry.

The Beauties Of Heeramandi

 1)  The Royal Look- Aditi Rao Hydari

Aditi Rao Hydari stuns in a regal maroon attire with intricate gold zari work. This look is completed with traditional heavy jewelry, including a statement choker, long earrings, and a maang tikka. The detailed embroidery and luxurious fabric highlight the exquisite craftsmanship that defines the fashion of the period.

2) Shimmer Saree by Sonakshi Sinha

Bhansali created a rich and majestic look by adding light artwork, sheer flowers, beading, and shimmer art. But Sonakshi Sinha, in Tilasmi Bahein,” shone in the shimmering silver sari and half-sleeved top.

Manisha Koirala brings vibrancy to the screen in a traditional Punjabi look , in a vibrant ivory printed lehenga with kurta with the same color. The ensemble, accessorized with earrings , bangles, and a nose ring, celebrates the rich heritage and colorful traditions of Punjab, adding authenticity and charm. In that scene, she has henna all over her hands and as she stands up, her beautiful suit is showcased.

5) The “Sakal Ban” Music by all the ladies

Sakal Ban was the first song from Heeramandi and in that video, the ladies including the background dancers all wore beautiful attires in yellow. They danced in the gorgeous look twirling their anarkali’s making the whole music even more royal and beautiful. The ladies wore a yellow heavy anarkali, banarasi dupatta and flared sharara with matching jewelleries that shines.

The fashion in “Heeramandi” is a visual feast, reflecting the luxuriousness and grandeur in the series. All the ladies adorned in richly embroidered sarees, elaborate lehengas, and intricately designed jewelry, embody the epitome of elegance. The use of luxurious fabrics such as silk and velvet, coupled with intricate zari work and traditional motifs, adds to the authenticity of the costumes. Each piece of attire is a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic prowess of Indian artisans. The vibrant colors and exquisite accessories not only enhance the visual appeal but also serve as a narrative tool, reflecting the characters’ emotions and societal status.

These five looks not only highlight the exquisite fashion of the courtesans but also reflect the rich cultural and historical context of “Heeramandi.” Each outfit, with its unique design and intricate detailing, contributes to the visual splendor and storytelling of the series, making it a feast for the eyes and a celebration of Indian craftsmanship. Every outfit showcased and worn by the cast in the film is beautiful and elegant making the film look even more royal.

What is Heeramandi about?

The plot, takes place in the 1920s, revolves around a fierce rivalry between the strong Mallikajaan and Fareedan (played by Sonakshi Sinha), the daughter of her former archenemy, whom she killed years ago. Armed with a scheme to overthrow the queen, Fareedan returns to Heeramandi to get revenge on her mother. The other courtesans—Mallikajaan’s sisters, friends, and daughters—grapple around them, each with their own aspirations for freedom and self-realization.
