SINGAPORE: Bukit Batok Member of Parliament (MP) Murali Pillai, 56, is set to be appointed Minister of State for Law and Transport on July 1. This announcement marks a significant shift in Mr. Murali’s career, transitioning from a long-standing legal practice to a governmental role.
Mr. Murali, a senior counsel and partner at the prestigious law firm Rajah & Tann, expressed his honour at being selected for the governmental position. He shared with The Straits Times, “After almost 30 years in private practice as a lawyer, I am coming in with some trepidation. I am sure there will be a steep learning curve.” Despite his reservations, he emphasised his commitment to working diligently to support the Cabinet.
Having been an MP since 2016, Mr. Murali is no stranger to public service. He currently chairs the Government Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Law, a role that has given him considerable insight into the legislative process and the functioning of government. His extensive experience in law, coupled with his parliamentary responsibilities, positions him well to take on the dual ministerial portfolios of law and transport.
However, Mr. Murali has requested to officially begin his new duties on July 1, allowing him time to manage his existing legal commitments. This transition period will enable him to address ongoing court cases and client obligations, ensuring a smooth shift from private practice to his new public responsibilities.
Affectionately known as “Ah Mu,” Mr. Murali has been a familiar figure in Bukit Batok for over two decades. He began his journey in the community as a volunteer before being elected as the area’s MP in 2016. His deep connection with the residents and his dedication to service have earned him widespread respect and support.
