The inaugural Sports Science Training Workshop hosted by the Selangor State Silambam Association was an important event in the field of sports education and training.

60 eager participants showed up for the workshop, which was held from May 9 to May 12 at the Rakan Muda Training Centre in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur. The participants were interested in learning more about sports science and its application to Silambam, a traditional martial art form with strong Malaysian roots.

The collaboration between the Selangor State Malaysian Silambam Association and the National Sports Institute demonstrated the commitment to promoting excellence in sports education and training. The workshop demonstrated a comprehensive approach to skill development and knowledge distribution by drawing participation from teachers and sports department members in addition to seasoned Silambam practitioners.

S. Saravanan, President of the State Silambam Association, hailed the workshop as a historic achievement and emphasized how inclusive it was, allowing 60 Silambam teachers and trainers to participate—a significant increase from previous years when only a small number were given such opportunities. This democratization of sports education access points to a progressive approach to developing talent and encouraging a lifelong learning culture in the Silambam neighborhood.

This workshop’s relevance extends beyond skill building it is strongly aligned with the Selangor State Government’s strategic objectives, particularly its ambitious goal of generating 10,000 adept Silambam students. The workshop establishes a strong basis for accomplishing this overall objective by providing participants with an extensive grasp of sports anatomy, nutritional principles, training methodologies, medical considerations, psychological counseling, and other relevant aspects of sports science.

The session, led by prominent coaches from the National Sports Forum and the National Coaches Education Institute, covered a wide range of topics, including biomechanics and anti-drug procedures, as well as the rich tapestry of sporting history. In addition to equipping participants with the necessary technical abilities, a curriculum this comprehensive encourages a better understanding of the scientific and cultural aspects of Silambam.

In addition to the direct advantages that each participant will experience, this workshop is expected to have a significant impact on the Silambam community as a whole, triggering a shift in thinking in favor of scientific research and evidence-based teaching approaches community.
