Oscar-winning music maestro AR Rahman recently opened up about his early life and career struggles during a conversation with Imtiaz Ali, Mohit Chauhan, and Irshad Kamil for Netflix. Despite being a globally recognized figure in the music industry today, Rahman’s journey was fraught with financial challenges and sacrifices.
When was asked about his childhood , he shared that he never went to college, a decision that initially made him feel like he was missing out.
“When I was 12, I was vibing with people in their 40s and 50s. My boredom led me to listen to many other things, to explore what was there on the other side. That side was spectacular for me. There was so much out there,” he recalled.
His early exposure to a diverse range of music and interactions with older musicians significantly influenced his artistic development.
The legendary singer also shared how he suffered with financial difficulties as a kid. One of the most touching moments in his story is the financial struggle he faced while setting up his first studio. He revealed that his mother had to sell her jewelry to help him purchase his initial recording equipment.
“When I built my studio, I didn’t have money to buy an amplifier or equalizer. There was just an AC with a shelf and carpet. I used to be sitting there not having money to buy anything. I built this and was sitting inside with no equipment. My first recorder came after my mom gave her jewels to be pledged. That is when I felt empowered. I could see my future, that one moment I changed.”
This selfless act by his mother not only provided Rahman with the tools he needed to pursue his passion but also gave him a sense of determination and hope. The support from his family during these tough times was crucial to his eventual success. Now he is known internationally and a Legendary Indian Singer.
