Over the years, Malaysians have garnered considerable success in the global entertainment and fashion arenas. One such luminary is the celebrated Malaysian model, Sharminidevi, affectionately referred to as Sharwita. Her illustrious career has seen her grace the catwalks of renowned designers and prestigious fashion weeks across the globe. Her presence has illuminated runways and magazine spreads both domestically and internationally. Sharwita captured widespread attention with her appearance at Times Fashion Week last year, and she earned the distinguished honor of opening the runway for renowned designer Riitu Kumar at The Week fashion event held in India during the same period.
Sharwita has further established her presence in the international fashion and entertainment industry with an appearance at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The Cannes Film Festival stands as one of cinema’s most esteemed events, held annually for a fortnight in May within the picturesque town of Cannes along the French Riviera. Originating in 1946 with the dual purpose of celebrating the art of filmmaking and honoring the finest cinematic achievements of the year, it has evolved into a pivotal gathering for actors, directors, and producers hailing from diverse corners of the globe.
On the second day of the festival, May 15th, 2024, Sharwita adorned the red carpet for the premiere of the film “PIGEN MED NÅLEN” (THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE). Sharing the spotlight with celebrities and cast members including Tessa Hoder, Besir Zeciri, Trine Dyrholm, Vic Carmen Sonne, Magnus von Horn, Malene Blenkov, and Mariusz Wlodarski, Sharwita is one of the few Malaysians invited to this prestigious event. This achievement stands as a source of pride for the nation and especially for the Malaysian Indian community, highlighting their presence and talent on the global stage.
Sharwita, the model turned entrepreneur, graced the 77th Cannes Film Festival red carpet adorned in a breathtaking ensemble crafted by the renowned local fashion designer, Hatta Dolmat. The attire, a contemporary interpretation of the traditional kebaya, epitomized modernity and sophistication while paying homage to Malaysian cultural heritage. This exquisite creation, a textured white petals dress, was handcrafted over a span of two months. Each of the 10,000 petals, varying in size, was intricately shaped from luxurious fabrics. The focal point of the ensemble lies in its top half, where the petals are artfully arranged to evoke the imagery of blossoming flowers, creating a captivating 3D-effect. Hatta Dolmat deliberately selected an ivory/off-white colour for the dress, symbolizing notions of ‘freshness’ and ‘pristine beauty.’
Sharwita, who is also the Managing Director for her own agency, Le Fashion Secret, she views this opportunity as a means to showcase the distinctiveness, authenticity, and diversity of the Malaysian fashion and entertainment industry. Teaming up with D Production, a prominent Hollywood and France film company, for this significant red-carpet appearance, Sharwita aims to bridge the gap between international pageant queens, professional models, and the fashion tourism community through the global platform of international film. Beyond mere representation, Sharwita harbors hope that her presence as a Malaysian delegate at Cannes this year will make a lasting impact on the global film and entertainment landscape.
