Director P.S. Vinoth Raj’s second feature film, “Kottukkaali,” has been selected for the official competition at the prestigious Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF). This marks Raj’s second feature-length film, following his critically acclaimed debut, “Koozhangal” (Pebbles), which garnered significant international attention and accolades.
“Kottukkaali” stars prominent actors Soori and Anna Ben in pivotal roles. The film revolves around the fate of an upper-caste girl who endures severe repercussions after falling in love with a Dalit boy. Set against the backdrop of the rigid and brutal caste system of rural Tamil Nadu, the narrative delves into the horrors and societal rituals that dictate Tamil caste society. The trailer, released recently, is both eerie and haunting, promising a complex and piercing portrayal of caste, tradition and morality.
P.S. Vinoth Raj, hailing from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, gained widespread recognition with his debut film “Koozhangal,” which was inspired by his personal life. “Koozhangal” premiered in the Tiger Competition at the 50th International Film Festival of Rotterdam in 2021, where it won the prestigious Tiger Award. This film had become the first Tamil film to have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival and was also India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards.
Produced by popular actor Sivakarthikeyan under his production company SK Productions, “Kottukkaali” is anticipated to continue the momentum generated by Vinoth’s debut.
