Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) has taken a significant step towards electrification with the unveiling of its first electric vehicle (EV) prototype, the EMO-1 concept, at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 held at MAEPS, Serdang. This prototype marks a crucial milestone in Perodua’s journey towards offering affordable and sustainable mobility solutions to its consumers.
Potential Pricing and Market Readiness
President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad revealed that the EV could be priced between RM50,000 and RM100,000. This pricing strategy aims to make electric vehicles more accessible to the average Malaysian consumer. However, Datuk Zainal emphasized that the launch of the final product will depend on the readiness of the EV ecosystem, including infrastructure for charging, second-hand value pricing mechanisms, safety measures, and battery recycling solutions.
The EMO-i Concept: A Glimpse into the Future
The EMO-i concept, showcased at the autoshow, is a converted Myvi model, reflecting Perodua’s commitment to integrating electric technology into its popular compact cars. This prototype runs on an AC permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and features a 55.7 kWh Prismatic Li-Ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery pack. The motor delivers a peak power of 120 kW, a rated power of 50 kW, and a maximum torque of 220Nm, offering a driving range of 350 km. These specifications, however, are subject to change in the final production model, which is anticipated to launch either late this year or next year.
Collaborative Efforts and Technological Innovations
The development of the EMO-i concept began in September 2022, involving a collaborative effort with Australian company EV North and three Malaysian universities: Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten), Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL), and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). This partnership aims to advance the understanding and application of EV technologies. The electric drivetrain of the EMO-i consists of two main components, a power test bench developed by Perodua and the universities and a power converter developed in collaboration with EV North.
Enthusiasts and potential customers had the opportunity to explore the EMO-i concept in person at the autoshow, where they could interact with Perodua personnel to learn more about the company’s latest developments and ongoing transformation efforts, including the Perodua New Outlet Standards.
Perodua’s foray into the EV market signals a significant shift towards sustainable transportation in Malaysia. With a focus on affordability, safety, and innovation, the company is poised to make a substantial impact on the automotive industry and contribute to the broader adoption of electric vehicles in the region.
