The Indian Cinema is receiving a ton of praise during the 77th Cannes Film Festival. Anasuya Sengupta has made history with her on-screen performance, following in the footsteps of Chidananda S. Naik and Mansi Maheshwari, who took first and third place in the La Cinef category. Sengupta won the Un Certain Regard Prize for her portrayal in “The Shameless,” which was written and directed by Bulgarian director Konstantin Bojanov, making her the first Indian actor to win Best Actress in Cannes history.

Anasuya plays the role of Renuka in it. The film underscores Renuka’s challenging path and her engagement with themes of love and survival. Alongside Sengupta, the film stars Omara Shetty as Devika, Renuka’s love interest. Sengupta’s powerful and emotionally charged portrayal of Renuka has been widely praised, cementing her status as a breakthrough talent on the global stage.
About Anasuya and her journey to stardom
Originally from Kolkata, Anasuya Sengupta has mostly worked as a production designer in Mumbai before moving to Goa. Her credits as a production designer include work on “Forget Me Not” by Srijit Mukherjee, “Masaba Masaba” on Netflix, and the 2021 Satyajit Ray anthology on Netflix. Sengupta had no intention of becoming an actress, even if she was successful behind the scenes. She originally intended to pursue a career in journalism after earning her degree in English literature from Jadavpur University.
She made her acting debut in the 2009 Bengali film “Madly Bangalee” directed by Anjan Dutt. Later, she moved to Mumbai, where in spite of her creative pursuits, she became restricted and claustrophobic. She moved to Goa as a result, where she experienced both a personal and professional rebirth. Her big break occurred when she received an audition call from “The Shameless” film , director Konstantin Bojanov a friend from Facebook.
” I auditioned for it, my director Constantin had reached out. It was a lead role, I have worked so hard for so long and I’m here to keep doing it more and more. It all feels worth it when I look back and all the pieces are wonderfully coming together for me finally”
Upon receiving her award, Anasuya dedicated it to the queer and marginalized communities worldwide.
