India’s Dipa Karmakar has once again marked her name in the gymnastics history by winning the gold medal in the women’s vault apparatus at the Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This historic victory marks the first time an Indian gymnast has secured a gold medal in any event at the Asian Championships, a significant milestone for Indian gymnastics.

Dipa Karmakar, the 30-year-old Olympian, posted an impressive average score of 13.566 to clinch the top spot, surpassing North Korea’s Kim Son-hyang, who scored 13.466, and Jo Kyong-byol, who scored 12.966. This achievement comes after a challenging journey filled with injuries, surgeries, and a 21-month suspension for a doping violation. Despite these hurdles, Dipa’s resilience and determination have led her to this remarkable triumph.

Dipa’s path to this gold was anything but easy. Earlier in the competition, she finished 16th in the all-around category with a score of 46.166, missing out on a quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The only Olympic quota from the Tashkent meet went to the Philippines’ Emma Malabuyo. Nevertheless, Dipa’s gold in the vault event adds to her impressive list of firsts for Indian gymnastics.

Dipa Karmakar’s legacy in Indian gymnastics is already well-established. She became the first Indian female gymnast to compete at the Olympics, finishing fourth in the women’s vault at the Rio 2016 Olympics— the best performance by any Indian gymnast at the Summer Games to date. In 2018, she won the women’s vault gold medal at the FIG World Cup in Mersin, Turkey, making her the first Indian gymnast to win a gold medal at a global gymnastics event.

Reflecting on her journey, Dipa expressed immense happiness and pride. “I can’t say how happy I am. This performance has come after surgeries and suspension. No other Indian gymnast has done this. So, this medal is really special,” she said.

The Sports Authority of India also celebrated her achievement, tweeting, “History created at The Asian Gymnastics Championship. Inspirational, Dipa! Congratulations on the #Gold.”

Dipa Karmakar’s triumph at the Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024 is a testament to her unyielding spirit and dedication. Her historic win not only brings pride to India but also inspires countless young gymnasts across the nation to dream big and strive for excellence.
