Christo Tomy’s debut feature film “Ullozhukku”, starring Urvashi and Parvathy Thiruvothu, was showcased at the prestigious Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles (IFFLA). The screening took place at the renowned Sunset Boulevard Theatre in Los Angeles on June 29. Both the director and lead actress Parvathy attended the premiere in LA.

Released on June 21, Ullozhukku has garnered significant acclaim from both audiences and critics. The film, a dramatic tale set in a flood-prone region of Kerala, revolves around the emotional and suspenseful dynamics between a mother-in-law, played by Urvashi, and her daughter-in-law, portrayed by Parvathy Thiruvothu. The screenplay of Ullozhukku won the top prize at the Cinestaan India’s Storytellers Contest in 2018, highlighting its compelling narrative.

The film’s music is composed by the acclaimed Sushin Shyam, adding to the film’s emotional depth.

Ullozhukku was a successful run at the Indian Box Office. The film’s selection for IFFLA is expected to further its reach and appreciation in international circuits, showcasing the brilliance of Malayalam cinema on a global stage.

Critics have praised Ullozhukku for its emotional intensity and strong performances, particularly highlighting Urvashi’s portrayal of a grieving mother. ETimes rated the film 3.5 out of 5, noting the film’s emotional turbulence and comparing it to the works of legendary Malayalam filmmakers like Padmarajan, Bharathan, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, and MT Vasudevan Nair.

Christo Tomy, known for his internationally acclaimed Netflix documentary Curry & Cyanide, makes a notable entry into feature films with Ullozhukku. The film’s screening at IFFLA underscores its potential to leave a lasting impact on audiences worldwide, making it a significant milestone for Malayalam cinema.
