AirAsia X (AAX) has marked a significant milestone today with the unveiling of a new direct route connecting Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Nairobi, Kenya. Scheduled to commence operations on 15 November 2024, this new route underscores AAX’s commitment to expanding its global footprint and enhancing connectivity between Asia and Africa.

The introduction of direct flights to Nairobi positions AirAsia X as Malaysia’s sole low-cost carrier offering this route, providing travelers with affordable and convenient access to Kenya’s vibrant capital known for its rich wildlife and cultural diversity.

In addition to bolstering its network in Africa, this announcement follows AAX’s strong performance in the first half of 2024, highlighted by robust financial results and strategic expansions into new markets. Earlier this year, the airline successfully launched flights to Almaty, Kazakhstan, marking its entry into Central Asia.

The Nairobi route is expected to serve as a vital bridge for tourism, business, and trade between Asia and Africa, facilitating easier travel and fostering economic opportunities for both regions. AAX aims to cater to over 156,000 passengers annually on this route, further reinforcing its role in global connectivity.

YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism Arts and Culture, expressed optimism about the new route, stating,

AirAsia X’s expansion into Nairobi is a proud moment for Malaysia. This initiative not only strengthens our tourism ties with Kenya but also supports our efforts in achieving our tourism targets for Visit Malaysia 2026.

The CEO Of Capital A Tony Fernandes, emphasized the strategic importance of the new route, he said

We are thrilled to launch direct flights between Malaysia and Kenya. This milestone aligns with our mission to democratize air travel and create new avenues for economic growth and cultural exchange between Asia and Africa.

Along with Tony Fernandes, Benyamin Ismail, the CEO of AirAsia X,, highlighted the broader connectivity benefits of the Nairobi route,

Our entry into Africa marks an exciting phase of growth for AirAsia X. With seamless connections to our extensive network in Asia, Australia, and beyond, we look forward to facilitating more affordable and accessible travel options for passengers.

To celebrate the launch, AirAsia X is offering FREE Seats* on flights between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi, available exclusively through the AirAsia MOVE app from now until 14 July 2024, for travel between 15 November 2024 and 8 October 2025.
