Shankar, renowned as one of India’s most celebrated directors, recently saw the worldwide release of his latest film “Indian 2” on July 12. Prior to this eagerly anticipated release, Shankar shared insights into another ambitious project he’s been developing.
During the Covid-19 lockdown, Shankar discovered the novel “Velpari” and was captivated by its narrative. Inspired by its content, he promptly began adapting it into a screenplay. Although Shankar has completed this screenplay, he has yet to finalize the timeline for its production, as he is currently focused on completing “Indian 3” and “Game Changer”.
Consequently, his historical project may take some time to materialize, leaving fans curious about which actor will eventually headline the film. Reports suggest it will be a monumental endeavor, budgeted at Rs 1000 crore. While names like Rajinikanth, Chiyaan Vikram, and Suriya have been floated for the lead role, Shankar has not made a final decision on casting yet.
“Velpari”, penned by Su Venkatesan, delves into the intrigue behind the wars waged by the Chera, Chola, and Pandyan dynasties against the small kingdom of Pari Vallal’s Parambu. The novel explores the enigmatic figure of Pari Vallal and the significance of life within Parambu.
Shankar’s previous success with “Shivaji” prompted him to revisit “Velpari” and approach Rajinikanth for the lead role, which resulted in the film becoming Tamil cinema’s highest-grossing at the time. The subsequent sequel, “2.0”, also achieved blockbuster status.
Shankar hinted at potential future collaborations with Shah Rukh Khan. He reflected on their past discussions about working together, revealing that despite several meetings, projects didn’t materialize due to various reasons.
