AirAsia announced yesterday that it will expand its operations to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (LTSAAS), also known as Subang Airport, further strengthening its status as Malaysia’s leading airline in terms of connectivity and capacity. This expansion, which complements its existing operations at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Terminal 2), will offer travelers enhanced connectivity and a more convenient alternative, thanks to the airport’s proximity to the city.

AirAsia’s operations at Subang Airport will commence with two domestic destinations namely Kuching and Kota Kinabalu with 14 flights weekly. The inaugural operation is set to commence on 30 August 2024 marking a significant milestone in the airline’s history and the revitalisation of Subang Airport.

Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A as well as Advisor and Steward of AirAsia Aviation Group said: “Subang Airport holds a special place in my heart, and it is exciting to witness its resurgence as one of the key players in Malaysia’s aviation landscape. The government’s decision to revitalise the airport into a regional aviation hub aligns perfectly with our mission to continue revolutionising the aviation industry as the increased air traffic and passenger flow generated by our operations will have multiplier effects on related industries, driving economic growth and development in the region. AirAsia’s homecoming to Subang Airport is not just nostalgic but also strategic. Capital A’s engineering arm, Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), has operations based there, enhancing the efficiency and streamlining of our aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) activities. Repainting Subang Airport red symbolises not just a return to our roots, but a commitment to our growth journey and contribution to the prosperity of the communities we serve. This is a step in the right direction for the nation’s aviation industry, and we are thrilled to lead this visionary move.”

Dato’ Captain Fareh Mazputra, Managing Director of AirAsia Malaysia, stated that the decision to establish Subang Airport as a secondary base in Kuala Lumpur was influenced by several key factors and opportunities. He highlighted that the airport’s location near the city center and surrounding suburbs provides an optimal travel experience for local passengers. Additionally, its smaller size and lower passenger volume promise a smoother journey for travelers, aligning with AirAsia’s commitment to improving the overall guest experience. The expansion will also offer greater flexibility and choice, while promoting healthy competition within the nation’s aviation industry.

“The Subang Airport operation will boost AirAsia Malaysia’s domestic network from 920 flights weekly to 948 flights weekly with a total of 40 routes. This additional operation is expected to drive our next phase of growth, not just in Malaysia but across the region. We are eagerly anticipating the addition of more routes from Subang, especially international ones, which are currently in the planning stages and subject to regulatory approval. This will reinforce our vision of transforming Malaysia into a premier aviation hub. We are optimistic about making Subang our sixth hub in Malaysia in the near future, further bolstering our network and expanding our capacity to serve more destinations and guests”, he added.

To celebrate the announcement, AirAsia is offering special promotional fares for flights departing from Subang. Travelers can book one-way flights to Kuching starting from RM88 all-in, and to Kota Kinabalu from RM99 all-in. These fares include a complimentary 15kg checked baggage allowance. The promotional rates are available for booking on the AirAsia MOVE app (formerly known as airasia Superapp) and on airasia.com. Bookings can be made from today until July 28, 2024, for travel between August 30, 2024, and October 8, 2025.
