Our Editorial Policy

Varnam Malaysia operates with full editorial independence. Our editorial decisions — including what stories we cover, how they are framed, and what opinions we express — are made solely by our editorial team and are not influenced by advertisers, sponsors, commercial partners, or external stakeholders.

Advertising and branded content are clearly separated from editorial content at all times. Advertisers and sponsors do not have the ability to review, influence, or approve editorial coverage prior to publication. Any requests to do so will be declined.

We are committed to publishing information that is accurate, truthful, and well-sourced. Before publication, our editorial team is expected to:

• Verify facts and claims through at least one credible, primary source where possible
• Cross-reference information against multiple sources for significant news stories
• Clearly attribute statements, quotes, and data to their original source
• Distinguish clearly between confirmed facts and unverified claims, rumours, or speculation
• Seek comment or response from individuals or organisations before publishing claims that may reflect negatively on them

When factual errors are identified — whether raised by readers or discovered by our own team — we will correct them promptly and transparently.

We strive to present stories in a fair, balanced, and impartial manner. Where a story involves controversy, dispute, or multiple perspectives, we aim to present the relevant viewpoints in a way that allows readers to form their own informed opinions.

Fairness does not require false equivalence. We do not present fringe views as equal to well-established facts. However, we ensure that people and organisations directly affected by our reporting have a reasonable opportunity to respond before publication.

Varnam Malaysia produces branded content, advertorials, and sponsored articles in partnership with brands and organisations. All such content is clearly labelled to distinguish it from independent editorial content. Labels used include:

• "Sponsored" — Content that has been fully funded and/or directed by an advertiser or commercial partner
• "Advertorial" — Advertising content written in an editorial style
• "Branded Content" — Content produced collaboratively with a brand partner where editorial oversight is maintained
• "Sources: [Brand Name]" — Content primarily sourced from or based on materials provided by a named party

Branded content does not represent the independent editorial views of Varnam Malaysia. Our commercial partnerships do not affect our independent news and feature coverage.

Our writers, editors, and contributors are expected to disclose any personal, financial, or professional relationships that may create — or appear to create — a conflict of interest in relation to their assignments.

• Staff members must not write about organisations in which they hold a financial interest
• Press trips, gifts, or hospitality received from PR or brand sources that exceed reasonable journalistic norms must be disclosed to editors
• Reviews of products, films, concerts, or services are conducted independently; receiving access for review does not guarantee coverage or a positive review
• Any undisclosed conflicts of interest identified post-publication will result in a transparent editor's note being appended to the content

Varnam Malaysia serves the Malaysian Indian community and is committed to reporting on cultural, religious, and community matters with accuracy, sensitivity, and respect. We understand the significance of our coverage to our readers and take special care when reporting on festivals, traditions, religious practices, and community leaders.

We will not publish content that stereotypes, demeans, or misrepresents the Malaysian Indian community or any other ethnic, religious, or cultural group in Malaysia.

We respect the privacy and dignity of individuals featured in our content. We will not publish private personal information about individuals — including home addresses, phone numbers, or information about minors — without clear public interest justification.

We are particularly mindful when covering sensitive topics including mental health, suicide, sexual violence, and tragedies. Our reporting in these areas follows responsible journalism guidelines and, where appropriate, includes relevant support resources for readers.

When we make a factual error, we correct it as quickly as possible. Corrections are handled transparently:

• Minor factual errors (e.g., incorrect dates, names, figures) will be corrected in the article with a clearly visible correction note at the bottom of the piece
• Significant errors that affected the meaning or framing of a story will be noted at the top of the article, and where appropriate, a clarification or updated article will be published
• We do not silently delete or alter published content to remove errors without a corresponding correction note

Where AI-assisted tools are used in the production of content — for example, in drafting, translation, or image creation — such content undergoes review and editing by a human editorial team member before publication. Varnam Malaysia does not publish fully automated, unreviewed AI-generated content as editorial.

AI-generated or AI-assisted visual content, where used, will be disclosed appropriately within the article.

Varnam Malaysia will consider requests to remove or amend published content in the following circumstances:

• The content contains factual errors that cannot be adequately addressed through a correction
• The content breaches an individual's privacy in a way that is disproportionate to the public interest
• Publication creates a demonstrable legal risk that was not identified prior to publication

We do not remove content simply because it is unflattering or inconvenient to a subject. Requests must be submitted in writing via our contact page.
