A Realistic & Bold Depiction of Women From Pa Ranjith’s Lens

Pa Ranjith, the director, is renowned for his peculiar directorial style, which is raw and contemporary. Notably, the female characters that he carved are always exceptionally unique and always leave a lasting impression.

His female characters have sparked a lot of curiosity since they are all authentic, forthright, pragmatic, and have flaws, which are relatable to the real-life women we encountered.

Today, let’s delve into some of the pragmatic female characters that he has presented through his lens:-

Catherine Tresa as Kalaiyarasi (Madras, 2014)

“Nee dan venum, kalyanam pannikuriya?” is a dialogue that everyone remembers until today. As said by Kalaiarasi in the Madras movie, Catherine Tresa has impressively pulled off this character. Kalaiarasi is an independent woman who speaks her mind, is fearless, and a woman who never gives up.

Radhika Apte as Kumudhavalli & Sai Dhanshika as Yogi (Kabali, 2016)

The women in Kabali was an unexpected pleasant surprise given the level of misogyny presented by Ranjith. In Kabali, Rajinikanth is not the only person who grabbed the attention of many, but the two female lead characters stole the limelight as well.

Not just stealing the spotlight, but Kumudhavalli and Yogi have defied several common stereotypes. Kumudhavalli, Rajinikanth’s wife in the movie, showcases a strong wife who has always been beside her husband and has been a motivator as well. Yogi, his daughter portrays a powerful woman who stands against injustice. Women in Kabali were not decorative, and that’s why they will stay etched in our minds.

Huma Qureshi as Zarina (Kaala, 2018)

Zarina, the first love of Kaala who doesn’t end up getting married to him, has shown how determined a woman should be. She is educated, assertive, and knows what she is doing. After ages of meeting her loved one, she doesn’t cross the bridge knowing that he is married to someone else. Zarina also adheres strictly to her morals and ideals, which makes her the ideal woman.

Easwari Rao as Selvi (Kaala, 2018)

Oh Selvi! This charismatic character who possesses the audience with her loud and ferocious voice, Selvi, is the only woman Kaala is afraid of and has the ability to silence him. Selvi has the power to ease complex situations. She doesn’t talk about political philosophies or ideologies, but she does talk about casteism, is reasonable, and makes fun of her sons when they are acting dramatic.

Dushara Vijayan as Mariamma (Sarpatta Parambarai, 2021)

It’s also impressive how Pa Ranjith portrayed ladies in Sarapatta Parambarai. Arya’s wife, Mariamma supports her husband as a devoted wife should. She sheds insight on the plight of the majority of working-class women who have the freedom to act independently on their own. Mariamma had the freedom to express herself without fear of offending her husband.

Dushara Vijayan as Rene (Natchathiram Nagargiradhu, 2022)

Natchathiram Nagargiradhu, a movie that stirs many opinion among moviebuffs. That’s aside…the character that Ranjith presented in this movie is superlative and noteworthy. Dushara, who played the character of Rene, is a free-spirited, bold woman who speaks her mind. Rene is complicated, faulty, and was genuinely loathed when the film was first released. She deliberately chooses to be fearless, refusing to let her victimisation become her narrative. Rene is confident, kind, aware of her politics, and she also takes appropriate action.

Unique ideas and gender stereotypes have always been inserted by Pa Ranjith into his well-written scripts. This brilliant director, has always brought female characters to the forefront.
