Bread Of Life: Uncle George; A Good Samaritan Who Feeds The Homeless

George Alexander Fernandez who is popularly known as Uncle George is a skilled pastry chef who lost his job at the age of 56 due to the unfortunate events brought about by the pandemic.

The Sun Daily

He is one of the many unlucky ones who are going through these depressing state of events.

“It’s been very sad. I was a reliable employee, and my family even labelled me a workaholic. My boss told me he wanted my resignation letter, and I was sent back with just a month’s salary as compensation. All I could do was pray for a new opportunity to arise.” he told The Sun Daily

Soon things started kicking in when his niece, Elvina Fernandez, suggested to her uncle to start a baking business on Facebook. He took her advise and came up with an obvious branding – Uncle George Bakes.

“I began selling non-alcoholic fruit cakes, cream puffs and tuna puffs, and now I’ve diversified the menu and included chicken curry puffs, biscuits and pineapple tarts that I’d like to sell during the upcoming Deepavali celebrations,” he said.

Within a week after Uncle George Bakes’ launched, he received almost 200 orders for his fruit cake.

“It got to the point where I had to tell Elvina that I really don’t want to be too popular because it wasn’t easy to cope with the orders because I’m the only one doing the baking.”

That was how his daughter Melissa, an experienced baker herself, finally joined him in the kitchen as a source of support and help. ‘It takes two to tango,’ says the famous quote.

Fernandez said when he started, his nieces and children helped to take a load of his shoulders by providing delivery services in the Klang Valley, but now this enterprising baker uncle has hired individuals who, like him, have lost their source of income to become his delivery riders.

Despite all the hurdles, he never forgets to give back to the Homeless. Apart from delivering bread to the poor, he also makes nasi lemak and fried meehoon, and distributes it to them.

His story is merely about someone who doesn’t give up at any cost. He believes things will eventually turn out to be good and he also makes sure to strive for it. Not forgetting, one has to also give back one way or another.

“Use the talent you’ve got. As long as you put your heart and soul into something, you’re going to be successful, “he concluded.
