Simply by representing her country this year, Sruthy Sithra becomes the first transgender Indian woman to hold the Miss Trans Global 2021. Life is a whirlwind for this young and beautiful lass as she continuously inspires young people and shows them that it’s really possible to live an incredible life as a transgender.

The 25-year-old beauty queen has been working as a project assistant at the Kerala government’s Social Justice Department and she has started to raise awareness on transgender and LGBT issues around the world. The physical event which was supposed to be held in London was cancelled this year due to the pandemic.

Besides that, Sruthy was also crowned ‘Most Eloquent Queen’ at the pageant, with candidates from the Philippines and Canada as runner-ups.

“Karma Says : If you focus on hurt, you will continue to suffer. If you focus on the lesson, you will continue to grow. You will definitely get the result of your efforts if you really dream about it,” Sruthy wrote on her Instagram page.

People did not always accept nor understand her, and Sruthy admits there have been “many times” in the past when she wanted to give up. However, in those moments of doubt, she tapped into a deep, inner strength.

According to Economic Times, she dedicated the award to her late mother and “Anannyah chechi”, referring to Anannyah Kumari Alex, Kerala’s first transgender RJ who committed suicide in early 2021.

“This smile means a lot. For me, for my community, for my country, for the transglobal organisation, for all those who are oppressed and marginalised.” – Sruthy

Transgenders tend to face immense criticism for objectifying women, or for presenting a certain feminine ideal that doesn’t represent all women. But Sruthy doesn’t see it that way. For her, competing in Miss Trans Global is an empowering, feminist choice. Paving her way for the next generation to define their own beauty standards, and live up for their communities on their own terms.

Keep inspiring and rock the world, Shruthy!
