Rarely does one come across a person who thrives a perfect balance between passion and profession, exceling in both.

Passion and perseverance is all it takes to achieve what you want.

Dr Kavitta Tamilselvam is one among the few who has gracefully managed her passion and profession with equal ease. Being a dentist by profession and an Indian classical dancer by passion, she had the will to persist in what she loved by embracing Bharatanatyam throughout her life.

With Mata Pita Guru Deivam’s blessing, Dr Kavitta is all set to perform a tribute Bharatanatyam show bearing the title, VaishnavāLayam at The Shantanand Auditorium Temple of Fine Arts, Kuala Lumpur (23rd July) from 6.45pm onwards. This Margam – VaishnavāLayam will be an offering, a tribute to her dance guru, Shri Nimal Raj.

Tryst with Bharatanatyam

Kavitta’s enthusiasm for classical dance blossomed as she watched Bharatanatyam performances at various temples and stage shows from a young age. Her journey into the world of art and Bharatanatyam began under the guidance of Shri Nimal Raj, with whom she completed her arangetram as well. She continues further training in Bharathanatyam with Shri Renjith Babu and Shrimati Vijna Vasudevan, renowned dance duos based in Chennai.

She has learnt nattuvangam from Shrimati Rama Devi Swaminathan, a senior bharatanatyam guru from Natya Sankalpaa, Chennai and Shri Guru Bharadwaaj, Mridangam Vidwaan based in Chennai. Having undergone classical vocal and veena training, she continues her lessons in carnatic music under renowned violinist, Shri Durai Srinivasan based in Chennai. Kavitta has performed at multiple places for several events and katcheris over the years and aspires to do many more such solo projects as well as group productions in the future.

VaishnavāLayam which translates as ‘The Abode of Vishnu’, is a journey of exploring the five different rhythmic gaits/patterns (Pancha Jaathi) within the boundaries of Carnatic music. The Bharatanatyam repertoire that is set to explore the different flavours of rāgas and tālas with complete devotion/bakti rasa will surely be a treat for the eyes, ears, and very soul of the audience.

The members of the Live Orchestra namely Smt. Bhavani Logeswaran (Vocal), Shri Nimal Raj (Nattuvangam), Shri Darmen Krishnan (Mridangam), and Shri Sriram Seshadri (Violin) will be performing along with Dr. Kavitta.

Let’s watch a glimpse of Dr Kavitta’s recent video of her performing Bharatanatyam. Beautiful indeed!
