A lockdown will be reimposed on some 15 million people in the Indian city of Chennai and several neighboring districts, state officials said, as Covid-19 cases surge in the region.

“Full Lockdown from 19th June for Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpet & Kanchipuram districts,” the Tamil Nadu state government tweeted on Monday.

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami announced a 12-day complete lockdown in Chennai and certain parts of Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts between June 19 and 30. #TNLockdown https://t.co/FXg8BO41KU

It will be in place until the end of June.

India has gradually lifted a nationwide lockdown over the past few weeks even as new infections continue rising.
