If there’s one thing the pandemic has shown us, it’s how important our families are. Jocelyn Dewi has taken up the mantle of family provider, and her main motivation is to do whatever it takes to elevate the lives of her family members.

The 24-year-old young lass who lost her father a few years ago due to an accident, was a strong pillar to her family. He literally worked hard to support his family. Since the passing of her father, her mother no longer seems to be the same. Jocelyn selflessly took up the call as the eldest in order to help her younger siblings, Anandasai Sumetta, 15; Ananda Krishna, 13 and Andrew Metta, 11 who are still in school.

After being retrenched from her waitressing job, Jocelyn worked as a delivery driver for a short time, but it wasn’t enough to put food on the table.

“What is something we can all do together as a family?’ The first thing that came to my mind was cooking!” she said.

So, amid the pandemic she launched a small food business called Jo’s Kitchen after losing her job as a waitress a few months ago due to the outbreak. Her little income is used to keep a roof over their heads and to purchase additional data for her sister and brothers to study online.

Recently, Sumetta and Andrew described the family’s predicament in a video uploaded on Jocelyn’s Instagram page to promote Jo’s Kitchen. Till date, over 15,000 people have watched the video.

Jo’s Kitchen serves home-cooked meals, primarily Indian, as well as local favourites like nasi goreng and mee hoon goreng.

While her sister Sumetta prepares the meal and helps Jocelyn in the kitchen, the boys will be assisting in packing the food into containers for delivery. Their frail mother lends a hand whenever she can. She prepares food in large batches, and her food costs between RM3 and RM5 for each container, with a minimum purchase of 50.

Being as young as they are, Jo’s siblings are understanding of her struggle in keeping the family afloat and do as much as the can to make her yoke easy and burden light.
