R Alliamah, who had attempted unsuccessfully for 40 years to get an identification card, finally received her brand-new MyKad directly from the National Registration Department (NRD) director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh last Friday, (29th July).

As according NST, Alliamah, 64 from Liberty Wood Estate, Kulim, Kedah has lived her entire life without a birth certificate or MyKad since her family home and other personal documents to register after her birth were destroyed in a fire.

Among her seven siblings, she was the only one without an identification paper; the others all had birth certificates and MyKads, she stated.

“I assumed that I would never ever receive the MyKad. However, I am the happiest lady right now. I finally obtained the MyKad to verify that I am a citizen of this nation and I may enjoy the privileges like other citizens of this country, Alliamah overwhelmingly expressed.

Alliamah said that since the age of 20, she had tried multiple times in vain to obtain the identity card.

Even Alliamah’s husband, S. Sahar Segaran, had tried everything to acquire her a legitimate MyKad up to his death at the age of 39, but after that, as a single mother, she had to work and put her kids first, so she gave up trying to get a MyKad.

“I have no education. Because of my family’s extreme poverty, I had to rely on others to help me in obtaining the MyKad. Some of these people even demanded payment, but I never received my MyKad,” she claimed.

Her son, Faizal Suresh Abdullah said that he sought assistance from a number of sources, including local politicians and political parties. After receiving a recommendation from an official from the NRD, they submitted a formal application in December of last year.

According to Datuk Ruslin Jusoh, the Penang NRD ran a DNA test as soon as they received Alliamah’s application to establish her relationship with her  other siblings.

“Alliamah’s application was approved by the NRD’s late birth registration committee panel on March 23 this year, and her birth certificate as a Malaysian was issued the following day. This was done after conducting record searches, conducting DNA tests, conducting interviews, and retrieving supporting documents from Alliamah’s siblings”, he quoted.

Pertaining this, Faizal kindly advises anybody who finds oneself in a similar situation to go straight to the NRD, as they are willing to assist immediately.

Alliamah had endured a lot without a MyKad, but now that she is officially a Malaysian citizen, she can finally rejoice and enjoy the benefits that come with a citizenship.
