Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan made history at the 77th Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland by becoming the first Indian to be honored with the Pardo alla Carriera, a prestigious lifetime achievement award. This recognition adds another remarkable milestone to his illustrious career and highlights his significant contributions to the world of cinema.

Shah Rukh Khan, known for his charming and talent, received the award in front of a packed audience at the iconic Piazza Grande square on 10th August. Dressed in a black blazer and matching trousers, the 58-year-old actor captivated the crowd not just with his presence but also with his heartfelt and humorous acceptance speech.

In his speech, SRK expressed his gratitude for the warm reception, humorously noting the similarity between the heat in Locarno and that of his home city, Mumbai.

“Thank you all for welcoming me with such wide arms—wider than the ones I do on screen,” he quipped, referencing his famous open-armed pose. He also praised Locarno as a “very beautiful, very cultural, very artistic, and extremely hot city,” adding with a smile that it felt just like home.

Reflecting on his journey in cinema, SRK emphasized the universal nature of art and filmmaking.

“I truly believe cinema has been the most profound and influential artistic medium of our age. Art is the act of affirming life above all. It goes beyond every man-made boundary into a space of liberation,” he stated, highlighting the power of cinema to transcend political, moral, and intellectual boundaries.

The festival also celebrated Shah Rukh’s work by screening his 2002 hit film “Devdas”, which has been one of the defining movies of his career. His visit to Switzerland brought back memories of his earlier days in the country, particularly his collaborations with the late Yash Chopra in the 1990s.

“When I started off in the late 90s, to be here was a big thing. And now, when I come so many years later, people remember those things. Yeah, it’s very happy,” Shah Rukh shared in an interview.

Shah Rukh’s presence at the festival, coupled with his engaging public Q&A session, left a lasting impression on fans and attendees. The event’s Instagram handle was flooded with pictures and videos of the star, capturing the excitement and admiration of the audience.

The Pardo alla Carriera award has previously been awarded upon iconic figures such as Italian filmmaker Francesco Rosi, American singer-actor Harry Belafonte, and Malaysian director Tsai Ming-Liang. Shah Rukh Khan’s receipt of this award marks a proud moment for Indian cinema on the global stage.

As Shah Rukh continues to make waves in the industry, with his recent return to cinema in 2023 through films like “Pathaan”, “Jawan”, and “Dunki”, his legacy as one of the most influential actors in the world only grows stronger. His achievement at the Locarno Film Festival not only honors his past accomplishments but also sets the stage for his future endeavors in the world of cinema.

Locarno Film Festival

The Locarno Film Festival is one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world, held annually in the picturesque town of Locarno, Switzerland. Founded in 1946, the festival has gained a reputation for showcasing a diverse range of films, from avant-garde cinema to mainstream productions. The festival is known for its emphasis on discovering new talent and celebrating independent filmmakers.

The Pardo alla Carriera is one of the most prestigious awards presented at the Locarno Film Festival. It is a lifetime achievement award that honors individuals who have made significant and lasting contributions to the world of cinema. The award is symbolized by the leopard, which is the festival’s official symbol.

Receiving the Pardo alla Carriera is considered a great honor, as it recognizes not only the recipient’s body of work but also their impact on the global film industry. Past recipients of the award include renowned filmmakers, actors, and other cinematic luminaries who have left an indelible mark on cinema.
