The Merdeka Eve celebration, originally planned by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to be held at Dataran Merdeka on Friday, has been cancelled. In an announcement on its Facebook page, DBKL stated that the decision was made out of respect for the victims of the recent sinkhole incident and other unfortunate events that have occurred in the city lately.
Last Friday, Vijayaletchumy, a 48-year-old visitor from India, tragically fell into the sinkhole at Jalan Masjid India. Despite continuous efforts, she has not yet been located, and the rescue operations are still ongoing. Authorities and rescue teams are working tirelessly to find her, but the search remains challenging due to the complexity of the situation. The incident has drawn significant concern, and the public anxiously awaits any updates on her condition.
In a separate statement last night, DBKL announced that the fire and rescue team had entered the sewage channel upstream from the tunnel at Wisma Yakin, where they also conducted manual shoring and excavation operations. The statement also mentioned that the mineral and geosciences department would continue their search efforts using ground-penetrating radar.
DBKL also encouraged the public to embrace the spirit of National Day by expressing their patriotism. DBKL also encouraged the public to honor the spirit of National Day by demonstrating their patriotism. This approach reflects a deep respect for the victims of the recent tragedies and acknowledges the community’s collective grief. By focusing on national pride and solidarity, DBKL aims to unite the city in a meaningful way during this challenging time.
