Last weekend, two esteemed icons of Indian classical dance, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, united with a powerful message: safeguarding Indian classical dance is essential to ensure the preservation of its cultural heritage for future generations.

Speaking fervently at the 4th International Conference on Indian Fine Arts 2024, both luminaries underscored the significance of passing these treasured traditions down through generations to sustain the vitality of the art form.

In her keynote address, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam shared profound insights into the essence of Indian Fine Arts, emphasizing that classical dance and music are not merely art forms but an integral part of a refined way of life. She remarked, “It is a way of life, a refined, beautiful, orderly way of life, where there is a discipline of body and mind,” and encouraged the audience to cherish these traditions.

Dr. Padma further explained that dance serves as a bridge connecting these disciplines, a theme aligned with the mission of the conference, which aims to protect the fine arts. She also highlighted the importance of embracing one’s heritage, stating, “Bharatanatyam was created for the whole world, not just South India.”

She emphasized that as individuals, we have the choice to either progress or decline. Expanding on the value of teaching, she said, “As a teacher, you must master everything from beginning to end; the entire textbook must be thoroughly understood. Creativity should come from within; it’s not about competing with others.”

Dr. Padma concluded her speech by applauding Bridge Academy for their outstanding efforts and acknowledging Limkokwing University for their crucial role in fostering this artistic heritage.

Ramli Ibrahim, founder of the Sutra Dance Theatre and the Sutra Foundation, emphasized the importance of the event, stating: “The launch of this conference by Bridge Academy, in collaboration with Limkokwing University, has united dancers, musicians, and scholars of Bharatanatyam for the first time in this magnificent hall. This event represents a significant step toward integrating Indian Fine Arts into Malaysia’s cultural landscape.”

Datuk Ras Adiba, Director of Community and Special Projects at Limkokwing University, expressed her gratitude for the partnership with Bridge Academy, saying: “Limkokwing has always been a place where the boldest, brightest, bravest, and best come together. This exchange of cultures is something ingrained in all Malaysians. Many of us share a connection with Indian culture, and this weekend highlighted India’s sophistication.”

Ras Adiba noted that Limkokwing University, a pioneer in creative and artistic studies, was the ideal venue for such a significant event. “Renowned for its iconic campus with vast spaces designed to inspire creativity, the university continues to serve as a hub for innovative cultural exchanges and a strong advocate for the arts. Limkokwing remains committed to hosting more events of this caliber, promoting international collaboration in the creative fields,” she said.

The two-day event gathered educators, performers, and students from around the world in a lively celebration of Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music. The conference offered a variety of workshops on these classical art forms, designed for both teachers and students. Attendees participated in interactive sessions that showcased the elegance and discipline that define Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music.

A distinctive exhibition highlighted the richness of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam, featuring ancient Tamil instruments, mudras, sculptures, and other artifacts. It offered a rare insight into the region’s artistic heritage, allowing visitors to appreciate the depth and beauty of these classical traditions.

Scholars and educators presented research papers, providing detailed insights on a range of topics related to Indian Fine Arts and cultural studies. A dedicated session on Traditional Tamil Games also took place, honoring the richness of India’s cultural heritage.

The highlight of the conference was the Kalai Sangamam event, where Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music teachers and students mesmerized the audience with captivating performances throughout the day. This event exemplified the spirit of collaboration and the transmission of artistic knowledge across generations.
