The women’s doubles team of Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, representing Malaysia, finished as runners-up at the women’s doubles final of the 2024 Arctic Open badminton tournament after falling to the top-seeded Chinese pair, Liu Shang Shu and Tan Ning, in Vantaa yesterday.

Competing as the third seeds, Pearly and Thinaah initially kept pace with their opponents. However, after reaching a tie at 10-10, their performance began to falter, resulting in a decisive loss of 12-21 in the first set.

The national duo improved their performance in the second set, taking an early lead. However, the match became more competitive midway through the set. Unfortunately, the issues from the previous set reemerged, as Pearly and Thinaah made a series of unforced errors, ultimately leading to a loss of 17-21 after nearly an hour of play.

Ranked world No. 7, Pearly and Thinaah advanced to the final by overcoming Japan’s world No. 6 duo, Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi, with scores of 21-19, 19-21, and 26-24 in the semi-finals. Last night’s match marked Pearly and Thinaah’s third final of the year, following their victory at the Hong Kong Open and their runner-up finish at the Korea Open last month.

As the tournament runners-up, Pearly and Thinaah will earn a commendable prize of US$15,960 (RM68,439). The duo will now focus on the Denmark Open Super 750, scheduled to be held from October 15 to 20 in Odense.

After a hard-fought battle, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah secured the runner-up position at the Finland Open Badminton Championships. Their impressive performance throughout the tournament showcased their skill and determination. Congratulations to the duo on their achievement, and best of luck as they prepare for the upcoming Denmark Open Super 750 from October 15 to 20 in Odense!
