Sivasangari Subramaniam marked her Deepavali celebration by advancing to the quarter-finals of the China Open squash tournament with a decisive victory. Facing off against her compatriot Ainaa Amani at the Shanghai Oriental Sports Centre, Sivasangari demonstrated impressive skill and composure, winning the match with scores of 11-6, 15-13, and 11-9.
World No. 9 Sivasangari advanced automatically to the second round of the China Open after receiving a bye in the first round. She now prepares to face a challenging opponent in Scotland’s Georgia Adderley, who is ranked World No. 28 and holds the seventh seed in the tournament.
In addition to Sivasangari’s impressive performance, three other Malaysian players have also secured spots in the quarter-finals. World No. 36 Aira Azman fought back after losing the first set to defeat Egypt’s World No. 37, Salma El Tayeb, with scores of 10-12, 11-4, 11-6, 11-5.
Eighth seed Aira Azman is set to face Egypt’s World No. 18 and fourth seed, Sana Ibrahim, in the upcoming round. Meanwhile, World No. 30 Rachel Arnold achieved an impressive victory, defeating New Zealand’s World No. 3 Joelle King in straight sets with scores of 11-8, 11-6, and 11-4.
Sixth seed Rachel Arnold, who advanced directly to the second round with a first-round bye, will compete against Egypt’s World No. 8 and top seed, Rowan Elaraby, in the quarter-finals.
In the men’s competition, World No. 15 and third seed Ng Eain Yow faced a challenging match against Egypt’s World No. 43 Yahya Elnawasany. After a hard-fought battle, Eain Yow emerged victorious with scores of 11-4, 7-11, 11-5, and 11-2. The recent German Open champion will now move on to face Egypt’s world junior champion, Mohamed Zakaria, in the quarter-finals.
National head coach Ajaz Azmat expressed his admiration for Rachel’s performance, noting that she displayed impressive precision in her shots against the seasoned Joelle King. He further commented on Sivasangari’s strong form, highlighting her impressive comeback since recovering from a foot injury just two weeks ago.
“Eain Yow and Aira also performed well against their respective opponents,” he added.
The Malaysian squad’s strong presence in the China Open quarter-finals showcases the dedication and talent driving their performances this season. Sivasangari’s composed victory, Aira’s remarkable comeback, Rachel’s upset over a higher-ranked opponent, and Eain Yow’s tenacity against a tough competitor underscore Malaysia’s rising strength in international squash. As they prepare for their upcoming matches, these players have not only captured national pride but also heightened anticipation for what they might achieve next.
