Malaysian billionaire T. Ananda Krishnan, born in Brickfields, has passed away today at the age of 86. His death was confirmed by Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd, the investment holding company he led.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our chairman, T. Ananda Krishnan, who peacefully left us on November 28,” the statement read.
The statement highlighted his significant contributions to nation-building and the corporate sector, as well as his philanthropic efforts, which have greatly impacted many lives. It also requested that the family’s wish for privacy during this period of mourning be respected.
Ranked as Malaysia’s sixth-richest individual by Forbes, with a net worth of US$5.1 billion (RM22.66 billion), Ananda Krishnan accumulated the majority of his wealth in the 1980s and 1990s, a period that saw him closely linked with former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
He frequently traveled between Malaysia and France, where he spent the majority of his time with his wife. His only son is a Buddhist monk in Thailand, and according to media reports, his two daughters showed no interest in assuming control of his business ventures.
T. Ananda Krishnan’s passing marks the end of an era for one of Malaysia’s most prominent business figures. Despite his immense wealth and success, he remained a private person. His legacy, however, extends far beyond his business achievements. Through his philanthropic contributions, particularly in education and healthcare, Ananda made a lasting impact on countless lives. His dedication to both nation-building and social causes will be remembered, as will his legacy in Malaysia’s corporate landscape and charitable sectors for years to come.
