Tourism is a crucial driver of a nation’s progress, contributing significantly to economic growth through revenue generated by tourists.
Spending on accommodations, food, transportation, and other services stimulates local economies and generates employment opportunities in sectors like hospitality and retail.
While the global tourism industry faced unprecedented setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic, recovery efforts are underway in many countries.
In the case of Malaysia, the story is one of remarkable success, particularly in attracting visitors from India.
From January to November 2024, Malaysia welcomed an impressive 1,009,114 Indian tourists, surpassing its target of one million visitors from the country stated the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry through a media statement on December 15.

This achievement represents a significant 47% increase compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019 and an outstanding 71.7% growth from 2023, highlighting Malaysia’s rising appeal among Indian travellers.
Key to this growth has been the introduction of a free visa entry policy in December 2023.
This initiative has simplified travel for Indian tourists and spurred a substantial uptick in arrivals, presenting new opportunities for tourism and cultural exchange.
Improved connectivity has also played a vital role in this surge.
In 2024, several new flight routes were introduced to accommodate the growing demand, with Indigo Airlines launching daily direct flights to Penang and Langkawi, in addition to their existing services to Kuala Lumpur.
“The increased connectivity from India helps to further strengthen Malaysia as a choice destination, especially in the lead up to the Visit Malaysia Year 2026,” said the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Malaysia’s recognition as the Best MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) Destination 2024 in the Indian market has further elevated its profile.
Indian corporations increasingly view Malaysia as a prime location for hosting events, blending professional activities with leisure opportunities.
This combination has amplified Malaysia’s attractiveness as a comprehensive travel destination and has abled Malaysia to showcase its rich cultural heritage.
Looking ahead, Malaysia is committed to building on the momentum achieved in 2024. Plans for 2025 include enhancing air connectivity, creating tailored tourism products, and fostering closer partnerships with industry stakeholders.
These efforts aim to solidify the country’s status as a premier destination for Indian tourists, particularly as preparations intensify for Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (VMY2026).
