In our community, we have a tradition of treating animals in our households as members of the family. These animals receive the same love and attention as any other family member.
An incident that happened during a tragedy at Estate Hong Seng, Georgetown yesterday showcased the lovely bond between a human and an animal.
A fire broke out yesterday (16 December) around 6 PM, destroying seven houses in the process.
Amid the chaos, while many victims were focused on saving themselves and their loved ones, a 40-year-old woman(who does not want to be named) risked her life to save her pet dog.
According to the woman, she had just returned home from work when she learned about the fire and realized her dog was still inside the house.
Without hesitation, she rushed into the burning building and managed to rescue her beloved pet.
Fortunately, no one was harmed during her courageous act. She later shared that she had expected her dog to be near the front of the house, making the rescue slightly less risky.
This incident highlights the deep bond shared between the woman and her dog.
Fire Incident at Estate Hong Seng
Despite this heartwarming story, the fire left 21 people homeless. To make matters worse, the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) faced challenges in reaching the estate promptly due to the narrow entrance.
Operations Commander Mohd Nazril Hisyam Napiah from the Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) stated that his team received the distress call at 6:40 PM.
A total of 25 personnel, assisted by the nearby Volunteer Fire Brigade (PBS), were dispatched to the scene.
“When we approached the location, we found the entrance was extremely narrow, which significantly slowed down the fire engines,” he explained.
The rescue team took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, a critical measure given the close proximity of the houses.
Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Relief Efforts Underway
Meanwhile, Bukit Bendera Member of Parliament, Syerleena Abdul Rashid, confirmed that 21 individuals were affected by the fire.
Many victims lost everything, including their belongings and vital identification documents.
“We are currently gathering information to determine the necessary immediate assistance, including providing temporary shelter for the victims,” she said.
