The upcoming film, directed by Barry Jenkins, serves as a prequel to the 2019 live-action adaptation of the iconic animated movie. Mufasa: The Lion King will explore the journey of the titular character, delving into his rise to become the king of his pride.

In the English version of the film, Aaron Pierre voices the younger Mufasa, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. lends his voice to Scar. The cast also features Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, and John Kani, reprising their roles as Pumbaa, Timon, and Rafiki, respectively.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter returns to voice Nala, while her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, takes on the role of Kiara, the daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala. The film also introduces several new cast members, including Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as Young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Taka’s mother, Lennie James as Obasi, Taka’s father, Anika Noni Rose as Afia, Mufasa’s mother, and Keith David as Masego, Mufasa’s father.

Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2019 computer-animated adaptation of The Lion King, returns as the scriptwriter for Mufasa: The Lion King. The film will also feature original songs composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The highly anticipated Mufasa: The Lion King is set to release globally on December 20.
