As we celebrate this joyous Christmas season, let’s shine a spotlight on an incredible story of passion and perseverance. Kryshalyny Prakash, a 20-year-old Indian talent from Seremban, is a promising self-taught baker and the founder of Make It Sweet, a thriving and well-recognized baking business. Remarkably, she began her entrepreneurial journey at just 16 years old. Her passion for baking was sparked by watching her mother bake for the family at home. From a young age, Kryshaleni aspired to become a chef, often captivated by cooking programs on television. This early inspiration motivated her to experiment with baking during her school years, laying the foundation for her future success.
Reflecting on how her journey led to the creation of ‘Make It Sweet’, Krysha shared that it all began during the pandemic. When Malaysia was hit by COVID-19, the challenges brought unexpected opportunities for her. During the Movement Control Order (MCO) implemented in Malaysia, bakeries and supermarkets remained closed for months, making it difficult for people to celebrate special occasions at home.
Knowing Krysha’s talent for baking, her neighbors and friends began requesting her to bake cakes for them. As word spread, more and more people approached her with requests, inspiring her to turn her passion into a business. It was during these challenging times in 2020 that ‘Make It Sweet’ was born.
‘Make It Sweet’ began to grow steadily, gaining recognition and expanding its reach. Krysha took the business to prominent bazaars such as Pondy Bazaar and the Agenda Suria Deepavali Bazaar, setting up a booth to showcase and sell her cakes. The booth’s unique arrangement and creative decorations made it stand out from the rest, attracting many customers.
Through these bazaars, ‘Make It Sweet’ reached a wider audience. Despite being based in Seremban, the business started receiving orders from across Malaysia, spanning from the northern to the southern regions, further solidifying its reputation.
Krysha shared, “There was a time when a customer from Puchong placed an order with us and was willing to arrange a Grab delivery all the way from Seremban to Puchong. Moments like these make me feel that Make It Sweet is growing steadily, and I’m truly grateful for it.”
Krysha didn’t want to remain just an ordinary home baker; she aspired to turn her passion into a full-fledged career. She was determined to gain not only hands-on experience in baking but also formal knowledge and academic qualifications to become certified in her field. To achieve this, she pursued an Advanced Diploma in Pastry Arts at the Academy of Pastry and Culinary Arts (APCA). Upon completing her studies, she began working as a Pastry Commis at Equatorial, further advancing her professional journey.
Krysha is a self-taught baker who didn’t attend any formal classes until pursuing her diploma. She learned the art of baking from her mother and by watching YouTube tutorials. With determination and persistence, she experimented and practiced, gradually mastering the craft.
Krysha’s family has played a pivotal role in the success of ‘Make It Sweet’. Alongside providing her with moral support, her parents assist in delivering baking orders. Krysha carries out all her baking at home, and her parents and siblings actively help with deliveries and purchasing baking ingredients.
“Without their support, this wouldn’t have been possible,” says Krysha.
At ‘Make It Sweet’, Krysha creates a wide variety of treats, including customized cakes, tarts, brownies, macarons, and many other pastries. The business also provides beautifully arranged dessert corners for events. Krysha is meticulous in meeting her customers’ requests, striving to replicate their ideas, visions, and expectations with precision. Her dedication consistently ensures customer satisfaction.
One of the business’s notable achievements was fulfilling an order for Petron Malaysia’s 10th anniversary, reflecting the trust and capability of Make It Sweet. Over the years, the business has successfully handled nearly 4,000 orders, marking an impressive milestone in its journey.
When asked about her most memorable cake order, Krysha shared, “I received a customized cake order from a Malay customer who requested a fur cake in a gravity-defying style. It was my first time creating a cake in that design, and it became my favorite challenge.”
Krysha says she doesn’t find baking challenging because she pours her heart into ‘Make It Sweet’. Even though she has started working and must manage her time outside of working hours to fulfill orders for her business, she willingly accepts this to take ‘Make It Sweet’ to the next level. She stays up-to-date with current cake trends by following Western media platforms, ensuring that she always delivers the best to her customers.
“The satisfaction of my customers is my top priority. Their appreciation for my work is the greatest reward I could ask for—there is nothing more fulfilling. I have many loyal, repeat customers, and they are my source of motivation to take on new challenges and continuously improve and innovate my baking. Despite not having a personal connection with all of them, they continue to place their trust in me and return for more. I am forever grateful for their support.”
Krysha emphasized, “Many people with an interest in baking often teach themselves and remain home bakers. I didn’t want that for myself. I wanted academic growth and a proper career in this field. That’s why I pursued an advanced diploma in culinary arts. People should understand that they can improve themselves and further their education in this field. Unfortunately, many still look down on culinary careers. When children show an interest in becoming chefs or working in culinary arts, some parents discourage them, thinking it’s not a respectable profession. We should not devalue any job—every profession deserves respect. This is something especially important for the Indian community to realize.”
Kryshaleni’s inspiring journey from a self-taught baker to the founder of a growing business, Make It Sweet, exemplifies the power of passion, perseverance, and the willingness to embrace challenges. Starting from humble beginnings during the pandemic, her dedication to honing her craft, supported by her family and her drive for continuous learning, has transformed her dream into a flourishing business.
Her story is a reminder that with determination, self-belief, and the right support system, it is possible to turn passion into a rewarding career. Krysha’s journey also serves as a call to value and respect all professions, inspiring others to chase their dreams and break stereotypes, especially in fields often overlooked. As she continues to innovate and grow, Krysha remains a shining example of how young talents can make a meaningful impact in their chosen fields.
