The opening day of the Malaysia Open 2025 at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, brought mixed fortunes for the national badminton. While many local shuttlers faced early exits, three pairs managed to shine and secure their spots in the second round. National mixed doubles duo Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and men’s doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun delivered strong performances to advance to the second round.

Tang Jie and Ee Wei had a commanding start in their opening match at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, swiftly overcoming Taiwan’s Wu Hsuan-Yi and Yang Chu Yun with a convincing 21-8, 21-9 win in just 27 minutes. Their performance marked them as the first Malaysian pair to advance in the Super 1000 tournament. Ee Wei emphasized their focus, remaining unfazed by other results, saying, “We did not think much and just want Malaysian representatives to win, more so on home ground.”

The pair is now set to face another tough challenge in the quarter-finals against Taiwan’s Ming Che Lu-Hung En-Tzu, who narrowly defeated Malaysia’s Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin in a hard-fought rubber set (28-26, 14-21, 24-22).

Wei Chong and Kai Wun also made a mark with a solid 37-minute victory over Japan’s Kenya Mitsuhashi-Hiroki Okamura, winning 21-12, 21-17. Despite a few errors, the duo managed to hold their ground and will meet eighth seeds Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan from Taiwan in the next round, after the Taiwanese pair dispatched their compatriots Chiang Chien-Wei and Wu Hsuan-Yi in three sets (21-18, 16-21, 21-16).

In women’s doubles, Vivian Hoo and Lim Chiew Sien continued the positive momentum by defeating Taiwan’s Cheng Yu-Pei and Sun Yu Hsing in straight sets, 21-11, 21-17. However, they face an uphill battle in the second round against world number one duo Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning of China, who convincingly beat Denmark’s Julie Finne-Ipsen and Mai Surrow, 21-10, 21-10.

The day, however, was not without its disappointments. Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, faced another first-round exit, their third consecutive at the Malaysia Open. They fell to Indonesia’s Lanny Tria Mayasari and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti despite winning the first set 21-19. They eventually lost their rhythm, succumbing 14-21, 13-21 in the following sets. Pearly acknowledged the challenge of adapting to their opponents’ unpredictable smashes.

Adding to the setback, Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing also bowed out in the first round after being overpowered by China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian (17-21, 10-21).

Earlier in the day, Malaysia’s top men’s doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, experienced a shocking exit at the hands of Denmark’s unseeded pair Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard. Despite a strong comeback in the second set, they lost 15-21, 21-9, 18-21.

While several Malaysian pairs exited early, the performances of Tang Jie-Ee Wei, Wei Chong-Kai Wun, and Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien offered hope for the home crowd as the tournament progresses.
