Stampede at Tirupati Temple Claims Six Lives, Over 40 Injured During Vaikunta Darshan Token Distribution

A devastating stampede at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, resulted in the tragic loss of six lives and left more than 40 devotees injured on January 8, 2025. The incident occurred as thousands of devotees gathered to collect tokens for the highly anticipated Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam, part of the Vaikunta Ekadasi festival scheduled to begin on January 10.

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) had announced the distribution of over 120,000 tokens through special counters set up at 94 locations across Tirupati, including the Vishnu Nivasam, Srinivasam, and Bhudevi complexes. The ticket distribution, which started on January 9, drew an overwhelming crowd, creating chaos despite the arrangements made by TTD officials.

Eyewitness accounts says that the situation spiraled out of control when police opened the gates, and the surging crowd caused a stampede near Vishnu Nivasam. Injured devotees were immediately rushed to the Sri Venkateswara Ramnarain Ruia Government Hospital, where they are receiving treatment. Authorities are still in the process of identifying the deceased and the injured.

Expressing his shock and sorrow over the tragedy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu instructed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the victims. He also called for a thorough investigation and strict action against any employees whose negligence might have contributed to the disaster.

This incident has raised concerns about the management of large gatherings during major religious events. The Vaikunta Ekadasi festival draws thousands of devotees every year, making crowd control a critical responsibility for authorities. The TTD and local administration are expected to review and strengthen safety protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.

The tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the need for improved crowd management strategies to ensure the safety of devotees during spiritual gatherings. As the families of the victims mourn their loss, the state has pledged to take measures to address the lapses and uphold the sanctity of such events.
