Maha Kumbh Mela event takes place every 12 years, is one of the most significant events in the Hindu religious calendar, drawing millions of devotees all over the world to gather at Ganges and Yamuna river in Prayagraj. Authorities had predicted up to 400 million devotees would be in the festival this year, which runs for six weeks.

According to local government official Akanksha Rana, the stampede was triggered when the crowd control barriers collapsed under pressure from the overcrowded festival. Past Tragedies and Safety Measures

This is not the first time a deadly stampede has occurred at Kumbh Mela, the event had an issue in 1954, when over 400 people died in a day and even in 2013, where 36 lives were gone.

In efforts to prevent another tragedy, authorities installed hundreds of surveillance cameras and drones to monitor the crowd. Despite these precautions the overwhelming number of devotees proved it to be a difficult situation to manage.

In an effort to prevent such tragedies, authorities had installed hundreds of surveillance cameras and deployed drones to monitor crowd movements. The footage was relayed to a command and control center designed to detect potential dangers. Despite these precautions, the overwhelming number of devotees proved difficult to manage.

Authorities are now conducting an investigation into the circumstances leading to the stampede and looking if there are more safety measures that can be implemented for the rest of the festival. As the Maha Kumbh Mela continues, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the challenges of managing an immense scale of events.
