For the first time, a Murugan temple has been established in Jakarta, Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the city’s religious and cultural history. The inauguration of the Jakarta Murugan Temple, also known as Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam, represents a new chapter of spiritual and cultural enrichment. As the first temple in Jakarta dedicated to Lord Murugan, it stands as a sacred landmark and a testament to Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity.
The temple’s inauguration will be celebrated with the Maha Kumbhabhishegam, a sacred Hindu ritual, on Sunday, February 2, 2025. The ceremony, set to take place from 7:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., will be held at the temple’s site in Perumahan Daan Mogot Baru, Kalideres, West Jakarta.

The construction of the temple commenced on February 14, 2020, with a groundbreaking ceremony led by distinguished priests from India and Malaysia. The inauguration is expected to be attended by notable dignitaries, including the governor of Jakarta, members of Indonesia’s parliament, the Indian ambassador, and leaders from various religious and cultural organizations.
“Jakarta Murugan Temple represents Indonesia’s unity in diversity, serving as a fundamental part of its cultural and spiritual heritage,” said Selwendren, Chairman of the Shri Sanathana Dharma Aalayam Foundation.
The temple is designed as an inclusive sanctuary, embracing all denominations of Hinduism, including Shaivism and Vaishnavism. It features a range of sacred deities, including:
- Lord Murugan, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Bhuvanesvari, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, Shiva Lingam, Lord Hanuman, Sage Agastya, Navagrahas, Idumban, and Arupadai Veedu.
- Rajagopuram: A majestic 40-meter tower, symbolizing divine splendor.
- Murugan Statue: A towering 21-meter figure, embodying spiritual devotion and aspiration.
Additionally, the temple features a Multipurpose Hall, providing a dedicated space for community events and cultural gatherings. It also houses the Indo-India History Museum, honoring the deep historical and cultural connections between Indonesia and India.
