Sivasangari Triumphs in Five Game Thriller To Win Cincinnati Gaynor Cup 2025

Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam delivered a spectacular performance in the Cincinnati Gaynor Cup 2025, securing her first PSA Level title of the 2024/2025 season. The Squash Star overcame the US Amanda Sobhy in a five game final, marking a significant milestone in her comeback journey and bringing pride to Malaysia.

The final saw Sivasangari take on the No.2 seed Amanda, after defeating top seed Olivia Weaver in semi finals. Right from the start Sivasangari kept her pace, using strategies that forced Amanda onto her backhand and prevented her from controlling the rallies. Her well approach paid off as she took the first game 11-7.

However, in the second game Amanda responded back strongly, cutting down eros and increasing intensity. She led the game with 8-1, leaving Sivasangari little room to give a comeback, ultimately leveling the match with an 11-6 win.

The third game remained the same with Amanda maintaining the lead from 6-6 onwards to move ahead for the first time. But Sivasangari, known for her resilience and never giving up spirit, woke up in the fourth game, mirroring her dominant opening game with level at 2-2 and forcing a deciding fifth game, the first in a Gaynor Cup since 2017.

With momentum back on her side, Sivasanagri took full control. From tense 4-4 position, she gave an impressive seven point streak to close out the match 11-4, sealing the biggest win of her season so far.

Expressing her joy after the match, Sivasangari described the victory.

“I feel great. It’s the first title for this year and after winning the London Classic last season, and now to be winning this is a great feeling”.

She also acknowledged the journey that led her up to this moment, especially during the setbacks in previous tournaments.

“I think I had a tough couple of months. Being 2-0 up and losing matches, losing close matches. I think that was all the learning process that I had to go through to win today. It came from the experience that I had over the last couple of months”.

Reflecting on her semi finals victory over Olivia Weaver, she also said,

“Yesteday was a big win for me. I’d never beated Olivia before and getting that win was huge. I told myself the job wasn’t done yet. I still had one more match to go and I tried not to put pressure on myself. I knew Amanda Sobhy is a strong player, so I just focused on playing point by point, staying in the moment and the results took care of itself”

With the Cincinnati Gaynor Cup trophy now in Sivasangari’s hands, she will be looking to build on this success as she continues her campaign in the PSA Squash Tour. Up next is the Silver level Pittsburgh Open 2025, where she will aim to carry her winning spirit forward.
