Thaipusam 2025 – A Cancer Survivor’s Devotion and the Festival’s Uniting Spirit

For M. Vijaya, this year’s Thaipusam was more than just a religious festival—it was a deeply personal milestone. After spending the past year bravely fighting Stage 2 breast cancer, the 57-year-old mother of two stood at the top of the steps leading to the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple, ready to fulfill her vow to Lord Murugan. At that moment, she was overcome with gratitude and emotion, reflecting on her journey of resilience and faith.

“As soon as I received the diagnosis, my world felt like it had collapsed. I immediately turned to Lord Murugan, praying for strength and recovery,” Vijaya shared with FMT.

She firmly believes that her prayers were answered, as she was declared cancer-free within just five months.

“I remember promising that if I recovered, I would offer a pot of milk to Him in gratitude,” she recalled.

Meanwhile, for 45-year-old R. Selvandran, a deep sense of fulfillment washed over him as he carried his 30kg kavadi up the 272 steps of the temple, surrounded by thousands of devoted pilgrims. His six-hour spiritual journey began at dawn in Sungai Batu, and though the path was physically demanding, he embraced every step with devotion.

“I couldn’t rush my way to the top, but when I finally reached the temple and gazed upon the face of Lord Murugan, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and fulfillment for having honoured my vow once again this year,” he shared. Having carried a kavadi for over 12 years, Selvandran is determined to continue this sacred tradition for as long as his body allows.

The vibrant energy of Thaipusam left a lasting impression on international visitors, including Zoey Carter, 53, from the UK, who was deeply moved by the devotion on display.

“I was eager to explore the temple atop the limestone hill, but the sheer crowd on the steps made it impossible. It was incredibly packed, but I plan to return and climb the colorful stairs once the crowd thins out,” she said.

Lochlan Monroe, 25, from Canada, shared that experiencing the celebration in person was far more awe-inspiring than anything he had read about online.

“My friend from Egypt introduced me to Thaipusam, so I did some research before coming. But witnessing it in person is truly amazing. You can feel the energy—there’s so much passion in the air,” he shared.

Thaipusam is more than just a religious event—it is a powerful testament to faith, devotion, and perseverance. Whether through fulfilling vows, enduring physical challenges, or simply witnessing the celebration, each person who takes part in this sacred festival carries away a profound experience. For devotees like Vijaya and Selvandran, it is a journey of gratitude and commitment and a glimpse into a deeply spiritual and vibrant tradition. As the echoes of chants and drumbeats fade, the spirit of Thaipusam continues to inspire, reminding all who take part of the strength found in faith and devotion.
