In recognition of the unparalleled contributions of legendary playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam to Indian music and cinema, Chennai has officially renamed Kamdar Nagar Main Road in Nungambakkam as SP Balasubrahmanyam Road. The renaming ceremony took place on February 11, with Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin unveiling the new nameplate, marking a lasting tribute to the iconic singer’s legacy.

The decision to rename the road stems from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s announcement on SP Balasubrahmanyam’s fourth death anniversary, honoring the singer’s enduring legacy. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments PK Sekar Babu, officials from the Chennai Corporation, and members of SP Balasubrahmanyam’s family, including his son, SP Charan.

SP Charan expressed his gratitude on social media, thanking the Tamil Nadu government and Chief Minister MK Stalin for honoring his father’s legacy. Speaking on behalf of his family and fans of the legendary singer, he conveyed his appreciation for the recognition. He described the tribute as a humbling honor, sharing his sentiments with the message, “As a family member of SPB and representing the fans of Paadum Nila, I am grateful to the government of Tamil Nadu for this honor. Humbled. #SPBliveson.”

According to ANI, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that the decision to rename the road was made in response to requests from SP Balasubrahmanyam’s family and fans. Acknowledging their wishes, the government approved the request, officially renaming the road in Chennai as SP Balasubrahmanyam Road in honor of the legendary singer.

Netizens have shared their thoughts on the renaming, with many expressing their joy and appreciation. One Twitter user remarked, “SP Balasubrahmanyam Salai sounds just about right,” celebrating the decision to name a road in Nungambakkam after the legendary singer as a tribute to his immense contributions to music.
