Baltej Singh Dhillon, a retired men from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer and the first Sikh officer in the force who is permitted to wear a turban has been appointed as a senator in Canada. His appointment was announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, marking a moment in Canadian history and underscores Baltej’s long commitment, contributions to the law enforcement, diversity and inclusion.
Born in Malaysia, Baltej migrated to Canada when he was 16 years old and went to serve the RCMO for nearly three decades. His journey in the force began in 1988, when he applied to join but faced rejections due to the RCMP’s dress code regulations which prohibited beards and turbans. Regardless of other requirements, he was barred from entry solely because of his religious attire. He then made an appeal to the RCMP Commissioner. After more than a year of debate and struggles, the Canadian government revised the dress code allowing Baltej to officially join the force in 1991.

During his career in the RCMP, Balej was involved in multiple high profile investigations, including the 1985 Air India Flight 182 bombing, terrorist attacks and more. His work with RCMP saw him take on roles in major crime investigator, police interrogator, intelligence officer and emergency planner. After retiring, he continued serving the community through British Columbia’s anti gang agency while mentoring youths.

Following his appointment as senator, Baltej took a Facebook post to express his gratitude by sharing the news of being appointed as senator and how this privilege fills him with gratitude. He ensured that as a senator, he is dedicated to representing the interest and voices of all Canadians.
“My heartfelt appreciation goes out to everyone who has supported me on this journey. From a young boy who moved to Canada at 16 with my mother and two younger sisters, with limited means, and the steadfast support of my older brother and sister-in-law, we persevered through many challenges. Like many new immigrants, we faced hardships, but we remained steadfast in the values and principles instilled by our parents. I am forever grateful to those who extended a helping hand, lifted me up and believed in me, enabling me to reach this milestone.”
Baltej’s historic appointment as senator showcases his dedication and resilience to foster inclusivity within Canadian society. His legacy in the RCMP and his continued efforts in public service serves an inspiration for many.
