With Ramadan just around the corner, people may need to brace for an increase in vegetable prices due to several contributing factors. Market consumer association and experts have warned that the combination of extreme weather conditions, high demand and supply chain challenges could cause prices to increase in the upcoming weeks.

According to the Kedah Consumer Association, the ongoing hot weather has significantly affected crop production, leading to a reduced supply of vegetables. This together with the high demand during Ramadan, is expected to increase prices. He has also said that there are other factors as well, including rising transportation and labor costs, as well as certain traders taking advantage of the situation to increase the prices.

He urged authorities to take action against unethical price hikes and suggested implementing price control measures on essential goods to ease the financial burdens on the consumers who need this daily. Beyond vegetables, meats such as fish, chicken are also expected to see a hike in the price due to similar supply and demand issues.

Federation of Malaysia Consumer Association (FOMCA) deputy secretary general Nur Asykin has also shared the concern, emphasizing that vegetable prices are highly influenced by weather patterns and natural disasters. She included her concern by highlighting that Coconut Milk, a key ingredient during festive seasons for dishes, could also see a price surge due to limited supply failing to meet high demand. She advised consumers to explore alternatives if prices rise significantly.

Adding to the challenges, Pertubuhan Mesra Pengguna Malaysia pointed out that in some states that were affected by floods are likely to experience a sharper increase in vegetable price due to disruption in the supply chain.

To manage the expenses, they encouraged consumers to adopt spending habits such as purchasing in bulk according to the products, making a shopping list to avoid impulse purchases and reducing dining outside. They emphasize the importance of a healthy lifestyle to ensure balanced spending on essential food items.

As another festive season approaches, consumers are advised to plan their grocery purchases wisely and monitor the prices.
