Superstar Rajinikanth’s action thriller Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, became a massive hit and gained significant recognition in the international market. Now, the blockbuster is set to expand its global reach as it gears up for a theatrical release in Japan.
Japanese fans have been eagerly awaiting the film’s release, as Rajinikanth has enjoyed immense popularity in Japan since the success of his 1995 film Muthu. The film became a sensation after Japanese film critic Jun Edoki recommended it to distributors, and it held the box office record for South Indian films in Japan until RRR surpassed it in 2022.
Jailer is set to hit Japanese theaters on February 21, 2025.

Jailer has already established itself as a global blockbuster, grossing an impressive ₹650 crores worldwide. The film had a record-breaking opening day, with overseas distributor Ayngaran International reporting ₹33 crores in revenue—the highest first-day collection in Rajinikanth’s career.
Jailer also featured an ensemble cast, including Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, Kannada legend Shiva Rajkumar, and Bollywood star Jackie Shroff, along with several other prominent actors from Telugu and Tamil cinema. Adding to the film’s appeal, Anirudh Ravichander’s music became a major highlight, with the song Kaavaalaa turning into a viral sensation. It is also worth mentioning Hukum, which became an iconic theme for Thalaivar.
Building on the success of Jailer, Sun Pictures has officially announced a sequel, with Nelson returning as director and Anirudh set to compose the music once again. A teaser for Jailer 2 has been released, featuring a cyclone warning and a lighthearted exchange between Nelson and Anirudh as they discuss ideas for the new film. The teaser concludes with a glimpse of Rajinikanth in action, hinting at another electrifying installment in the Jailer franchise.
