At the FICCI Media and Entertainment Business Conclave (MEBC) 2025 – South Connect, veteran actor Kamal Haasan was appointed as the Chairman of the FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee for the South. The prestigious event was inaugurated on Friday by Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin.
In a press release issued by FICCI, Kamal Haasan shared his thoughts on the evolving media landscape, emphasizing the potential of Indian cinema to serve as a true ambassador of Indian culture. He stressed the need for a long-term vision for the industry, urging both state and central governments to frame regulations that do not restrict emerging technologies but integrate them without disrupting the existing market. Addressing Tamil Nadu’s Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, who was present at the event, Haasan also called for a review and reform of the state’s entertainment tax on cinema.

Mr. Kevin Vaz, Chairman of the FICCI Media and Entertainment Committee and CEO – Entertainment at JioHotstar, highlighted the remarkable transformation of the South’s media landscape, which has expanded from regional to national and now global reach. He praised industry icons like Kamal Haasan, whose films have transcended boundaries for decades.
Reflecting on the post-pandemic resurgence of the box office, he credited films like RRR and KGF-2, along with Tamil cinema’s rich storytelling, for shaping India’s entertainment industry. As digital media continues its rapid growth, Vaz emphasized that India is an “AND” market, where television and digital platforms coexist, creating vast opportunities. With upcoming forums like WAVES and ongoing innovation, he expressed confidence that India’s media industry is set to make a strong mark on the global stage.
