Era FM Faces Backlash for Mocking Hindu Beliefs, Issues Apology After Public Outrage

Astro’s Era FM has sparked controversy after posting a sensitive video that has gone viral. The radio station shared content mocking Hindu beliefs, in which individuals were seen behaving inappropriately while chanting the sacred phrase “Vel Vel,” a chant traditionally recited by Hindus fulfilling their vows during Thaipusam. This has led to widespread outrage, with many calling for accountability and respect for religious sentiments.

Indians have expressed outrage, condemning the video as disrespectful to their religious practices. It has deeply hurt the sentiments of the Indian community. Netizens have spoken out, urging authorities to take action against such behavior, especially from a prominent radio station.

Thaipusam is a grand annual festival dedicated to Lord Muruga, celebrated nationwide by Hindus. Devotional practices such as carrying milk pots and kavadi are common during Thaipusam, symbolizing devotees fulfilling their vows. Mocking these sacred traditions is highly offensive and has sparked widespread condemnation.

Notably, MIC Deputy President M. Saravanan criticized the video reportedly posted by Era FM, in which its staff were seen mocking the kavadi dance while chanting “Vel Vel” and laughing, calling it insensitive to the Hindu community.

The Tapah MP urged the government to take appropriate action and called on Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil to address the issue. He emphasized the need to prevent such incidents from setting a precedent for other media outlets.

Following the public outrage, Era FM has taken down the video and issued an apology. The staff members involved also shared a video expressing their regret and apologizing for their actions. They assured the public that such an incident would not happen again.

This incident highlights the importance of cultural and religious sensitivity in the media. While the swift apology and removal of the video were necessary steps, it also serves as a reminder that respect for all communities should be upheld at all times.
