The National Unity Ministry has embraced the theme Harmony in Diversity and the Negara Bangsa (Nation-State) Concept as its main initiatives to foster unity among Malaysia’s diverse communities. Deputy National Unity Minister K.Saraswathy emphasized that the nation-state concept, as adopted by the ministry, aims to create a united society that embraces diversity while reinforcing a shared Malaysian identity.

“Nation-state does not mean rejecting cultural, religious, or customary diversity, rather it is about uniting these differences under a shared national identity,” she stated during the debate on motion of thanks for the royal address at Dewan Negara.

Strengthening Racial Unity

To further enhance racial unity, the ministry is considering organizing a national-level progressive nation-state conference this year. This effort is part of the initiative to reinforce unity and national integration across different communities.

Saraswathy also highlighted 2024 as a life changing year for the ministry, with a focus on four key efforts to advance national unity, The Unity Ecosystem, The MADANI Harmony Initiative, The Exploration of the Rukun Negara and The Socio-Cultural Community.

These efforts will serve as the foundation for the ministry’s direction in preserving and strengthening unity among Malaysia’s multi racial and multi religious communities.

MADANI Harmony Initiative

The ministry has also introduced the MADANI Harmony Initiative, which underscores the fundamentals of national integration, Understanding, Respect and Acceptance. This initiative is also to foster mutual respect and unity among Malaysians.

Saraswathy also revealed that in 2023, the ministry implemented 730 programs promoting unity, national identity, community development, volunteerism and cultural heritage through its agencies. These initiatives underline the government’s commitment to strengthening social harmony.

The ministry recognized two main approaches to resolve issues that could threaten racial harmony, the reformative approach and punitive approach.

“The ministry prioritizes the reformative approach which involves immediate corrective actions such as reprimanding the perpetrator, requesting an apology, and providing education through community engagement”.

However, legal action should also be taken in cases where these efforts fail. Anyone who commits any act, incites or makes statements that endanger racial and religious unity can be investigated under existing laws.

Commitment to National Unity

As Malaysia continues to evolve in multicultural nation, the National Unity Ministry’s focus on the Nation State Concept and MADANI Harmony Initiative serves a crucial step in unifying the citizens while preserving their identities.
